We have enjoyed many a day’s cycle exploring all that the area has to offer. We have mapped out a handful of our favourite routes along with Things to Do and Things to See along the way.
Our favourite of all and most suitable for all the family is to Take a Trip along the Carlingford Lough Greenway.
On 10th July 2025, the fabulous boardwalk that carries the Carlingford Lough Greenway along the Newry River from the border to Victoria Lock was completed. Now, the Carlingford Lough Greenway extends all the way from Carlingford Marina to Newry, a distance of around 19km. From Newry, you can pick up the Portadown to Newry Canal Greenway which is also largely flat, and from Portadown, take the ‘Black Paths’ to Lough Neagh. Lots of options for you to choose the perfect distance for a short family ride, or to cycle much longer distances, largely on the Greenway.
The Carlingford Lough Greenway walking, running and cycling trail is Ireland’s fastest growing and most sought-after tourism attraction. Running along the coast of the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, across the border to Newry in County Down.
The trail begins at Carlingford Marina (where there is parking) and travels along the shore of Carlingford Lough to the quaint village of Omeath, where there are cafes, pubs, shops, toilets and a children’s playground. In Summer 2025, the greenway extension to connecting Omeath to Victoria Lock on the Newry Ship Canal was completed. From there, you can ride along the Newry Ship Canal Greenway into the city of Newry.
Offering mild gradients courtesy of its initial beginning as a railway line and with magnificent landscape backdrops such as Coooley Mountains, Mourne Mountains and Carlingford Lough .
The Greenway has something unique for each and every visitor.
