OnYerBike Carlingford Lough Greenway E-Bike History Tours

OnYerBike founder and CEO, Richard Lewis, himself a keen cyclist, is also a qualified Cycling Ireland Ride Leader.

With a keen interest in history, Richard has developed a guided tour along the Carlingford Lough Greenway, one that will not only ensure that a group has an experienced Ride Leader, but that whilst riding along the route, you can also learn all about the significant events that have shaped the landscape, communities and history of the area.
Group Size
The Carlingford Lough Greenway tour is of two hour duration, and sets out from Carlingford Marina at 9am every second Saturday during the Summer months, from May to September. It can be booked on-line, or by calling +353871705209, and is designed for adults and near adults (rs. 16s) only. It may also be possible to arrange mid-week tours for company days out, groups of friends etc – just call with your requirements. Standard group size is eight adults – the maximum that a Cycling Ireland Ride Leader is permitted to lead unassisted – but can be extended by arrangement if you have a larger group. Smaller groups may be accommodated by arrangement also.
The Itinerary
Meet at Carlingford Marina by 8.45am for bike & helmet fitting, introduction and safety briefing. At 9am, we set out along the first section of the Carlingford Lough Greenway to Omeath along the shoreline of the Lough. You’ll be riding on the track-bed of the Victorian Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway, and there is much to see along the track, including a brief stop at Greer’s Quay after 4km. We’ll take a short pit stop after 6.5km in Omeath, where you can grab a drink or snack, pop to the loo, and hear about the history of the village, of Warrenpoint and other points of interest.

The next section will take us from Omeath to Victoria Lock, at the end of the Newry Ship Canal. We’ll be passing by the Newry River Range Leading Lights, Narrow Water Keep and Narrow Water Castle and we’ll pause at the Narrow Water Bridge construction site to see the new cross border bridge being built.

The final section will take us through Ferry Wood to the Cornamucklagh, and then along the Newry River boardwalk to Victoria Lock. Here you can learn all about the Newry Ship Canal and how, when & why it was built.
The total distance so far is just over 12km, so with pauses and pit stops, it will take just over an hour. After a short rest, we’ll head back, returning to Carlingford Marina by 11am.
